The plan seemed like a good one at the time: a pub crawl including all 28 pubs in the village. Half a pint at each pub, a walk in the fresh air between each pub, home to bed at the end. What could possibly go wrong?
It was true that none of us had ever been to pub 27, The Gravedigger's Arms, or knew anybody else who had been to that pub. We just assumed that it catered to a particular clientele who did not run in our rarefied social circle.
It wasn't until pub 12 that we noticed that the route from The Fox and Fireworks to The Gravedigger's Arms would take us directly through the abandoned graveyard, past old man McLeash's haunted mansion and through a tunnel under the decommissioned bio-weapons lab.
By then we weren't too fussed, so the plan went ahead.
The decor in The Gravedigger's Arms was on the shabby end of shabby-chic. The favored palette was grey and red, which should have been a clue. It wasn't until I went up to the bar and ordered six half pints of bitter from the oddly listing barman, and he responded that they only had Brains on draft, that I realized that we were in a zombie bar.
We didn't want to be rude, so we settled in with a round of steaming brains. Turns out the zombies were cracking lads and they only tried to eat our brains once, when Jimbo started cheating at dominos.
One of them had this 28 Pubs Later T-shirt printed up for me to commemorate the night! It's US-made, too.
If you're looking for a fun night out, why not consider The Gravedigger's Arms? Wear a sturdy hat, just in case.
