Drink Up, Issue #001 -- welcome to the UNOB eZine.
November 06, 2006
It’s our round!

Welcome one and all to the very first issue of Drink Up, the eZine of the United Nations of Beer. We’re proud and happy to be publishing this, barely two months after our website launched.

The good news keeps on rolling. We’ve added FOUR honourary UNOB Beer Delegates already, covering all corners of the globe! (Well, not quite ALL corners, but you gotta start somewhere.)

Our first beer and bar reviews have been posted. More will follow. Best of all, everybody reading this could send in a piece of their own and help the site to grow. Plus you could all forward this email to one or two friends.

Our rankings on the search engines continue to improve, which will bring more and more people to the UNOB. Before long, we’ll be the leading place for beer lovers to hang out and exchange information.

So, read on to discover what we’ve been up to and what our plans are for the near future!

Four Beer Delegates join the UNOB

Best news of all first. FOUR B.D.s have joined the UNOB! This means four countries are represented. Of course, there are many more countries to fill in, but as time passes and word spreads, we’ll see more people come on board. (We’ve decided to split up the USA and Canada into pieces, as they are too big for one person to cover alone…)

Douglas Gloag is the delegate for Japan. He’s also submitted a review of Asahi Super Dry, Japan’s best-selling beer!

Shannon Wand joined the UNOB as Canada (Quebec) delegate. She quickly sent in a a review of Brutopia, a microbrew pub in Montreal.

Andy Thorne became our Germany delegate very early on. However, his missus gave birth to their second child (congrats, Andy! Glad all that beer didn’t do any damage to your ‘little soldiers’), so he’s been rather too busy to get on with any reviews!

Last but by no means least, Kate McKeon volunteered to be USA (Texas) delegategate, with the promise of “being the hottest damn Tejas delegate you’ll ever have!” or words to that effect. To be honest, I had fainted with excitement, so my recall of the phrasing might not be perfect. Welcome, Kate!

We have at least one other delegate in the pipeline: Mattias Dahlstrom, who was toying with the prospect of being delegate for his native Sweden, but has since wisely decided to focus on local brews in his current home of USA (Vermont). As soon as he gets around to submitting his application speech, he’s part of the team!

Welcome to all our beer delegates. Part of the job description is telling your friends about the UNOB. The more people who know about us, the merrier the United Nations of Beer will become. So spread the word.

The Boring Bit: search engines bring drinkers to the UNOB!

Feel free to skip this bit if Internet jargon bores you. But we thought you might like to know just how successful our society is already, despite having only 30 pages of content.

To get noticed by casual Internet users, you have to be high up in the search engine rankings. Remember the last time you looked up something on Google? Did you bother looking at page 2? I bet you certainly didn’t dig down as far as page 3 or 4?

So the importance of being in the top 10 (the first page) should not be underestimated. Somebody looking for "Jap beer", for example, may not bother to look beyond the first 10 results. So, the very good news for the UNOB is that people who are looking for beer information WILL find our website! Give yourselves all a massive pat on the back from us.

(Near) Future plans

Among our next projects will be a page recording the greatest gathering of Beer Delegates and UNOB eZine subscribers to date. (Currently it’s two B.D.s and three subscribers. Surely we can do better than that!)

The Canada (Quebec) beer guide will have some individual beer reviews added by your Secretary-General, hopefully assisted by B.D. Shannon Wand. In addition, we’re expecting to announce an unprecedented DEPUTY B.D. to assist Shannon…

As previously hinted at, USA (Vermont) will "go live" very shortly. As soon as Matti gets off his backside, in fact... ;) There’s at least one local Vermont beer review waiting to be written: I know, because I drank it too and I’m going to help write about it!

We’re going to add new beer recipes, beer belly exercises and drinking games to our information pages.

Hopefully by the turn of the year, we’ll have a full calendar of world beer festivals drawn up!

We’ll be expanding our list of recommended gluten-free beers, plus adding a new ORGANIC beer section.

Finally, looking ahead to 2007, we have TWO HUGE PROJECTS in the pipeline. I can’t reveal too much about them yet, but suffice it to say that these will ROCK YOUR WORLD. Make sure you keep checking the UNOB site for updates.

Recommend Drink Up to a friend and spread the word!

Know a friend who likes beer? Please, please, please recommend the UNOB and Drink Up. It’s no exaggeration to say that the bigger the society gets, the better and bigger the benefits to all members will become.

Send them the Drink Up URL by forwarding this link: http://www.united-nations-of-beer.com/loneezine.html

May your froth never go flat!
