Alcatraz Brewing review

Indianapolis, Indiana
is a surprisingly liquid town. Huddled around the RCA Dome are a number
of breweries
providing beer to fans of good sports and good food alike. However,
those
looking for good beer need to be careful which bars they belly up to.
The Alcatraz Brewery, located one block from the RCA Dome, could easily be compared to the Indianapolis Colts' defense from their SuperBowl run. In that year, the Colts had one great player (Bob Sanders) who was surrounded by a host of mediocre talent.
Those who shell out eight bucks and change for a sample of Alcatraz beer will be treated to a similar arrangement.
The Bob Sanders of Alcatraz beer is the Chibuku cider, a South African brew made from sorghum molasses and mixed with non-alcoholic apple cider. Being a fan of sweeter brews, I found the taste of this beer to be light and crisp with a sweetness comparable to a Woodchuck hard cider.

The flavor is reminiscent of Woodchuck, but as I quaffed my sample, I tasted something else I had a hard time placing.
Finally it hit me. The Alcatraz Brewing Chibuku cider tasted like a cross between Woodchuck and a sweet white wine. Sounds strange, but tastes good.
The good times pretty much ended there. After enjoying the cider, I ordered a complete sampler of all eight of their beers. I thought that because the cider was good, the rest of their offerings were going to be good as well.
Or not.
I started with their Light Ale, a watered down, flavorless concoction that closely resembled the Bud Light the person next to me tried to order. I then moved on to their try their Red Ale, their Black Lager and their Strong Ale. Each was worse than the last.
By the end, I had two samples I only sipped because one taste was enough to tell me they were terrible, too.
The Alcatraz Brewery was a tremendous disappointment, especially since they started out so well. Still, I was impressed by their diamond in the rough so much that the next time I am in Indy, I will be stopping by to grab one. But if I need to do some heavy drinking, I'll be walking over to the Ram or even the Rock Bottom Brewery.
