Busting up the Beer Gut with an Alli

It is a dieter's dream to take a pill and watch excess fat effortlessly melt away. Now a product called Alli, that promises to be just such a magic bullet, is available over-the-counter.

This FDA-approved medication blocks about 25 per cent of fat ingested in a meal and thus decreases total consumed calories. Although beer doesn't contain much fat, this product could potentially offset enough calories to compensate for liquid energy ingested from the delicious goodness that is beer.

This particular magic bullet comes at a price which you'll understand if you've ever eaten an entire bag of Olestra potato chips. What goes in, must come out, and if it's not digested, it must still pass through the gut.

With Alli, unabsorbed fat comes out as oily globules. The upside is that you can actually see the fat you are not absorbing, and flush it down the toilet.

The downside is that it can unintentionally leak out. The manufacturer's disclaimer includes language about oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control and headaches.

Perhaps, maintaining your girlish figure while consuming copious amounts of your favorite chocolate bock is worth a pair or two of underwear. If not, you can also limit the amount of oily discharge created by limiting the fat in your meals to 15 grams or less, but really, at this point, why not just go on a real diet?

Annoyingly enough, this product works best when combined with regular exercise and a sensible meal plan.

If your goal is to drink more beer (and whose isn't?) without adding to the beer gut, this product could potentially offset enough calories that it might allow you to drink an extra pilsner or two without increasing your waist circumference.

One caution, though. The FDA recently reported a few cases of liver damage with Alli. Since beer can also affect liver health, consider talking to your healthcare processional or getting a liver checkup when using this product.
