Anchor Christmas Beer 2007: finally a Yule seasonal that's not simply bizarre
Anchor Christmas Beer 2007
Anchor Brewing, CA, USA
Most seasonal beers feel a need to respond to stereotypes. The worst of these are winter seasonals, which with the exception of Baltic Porters tend to be like drinking scented candles.
See Brooklyn Winter Ale for one of the worst; like drinking your uncle's cough mixture, AFTER he spat it out in disgust.
Happily, Anchor's Yuletide beer is nothing like that. At least, it wasn't in 2007 -- the recipe changes from year to year. It pours dark and rich, almost like a stout.
It smells of plum pudding. And it tastes delicious: dark, bitter-sweet, fruity and full of flavour. Merry Christmas!
