BABB Mellis beer: buzzzzzzzz
BABB Mellis beer (7% ABV)
BABB, Italy
Italian craft beer has until recently seemed like a contradiction in terms. But this is an up-and-coming beer country (no, really). BABB is one of the brewers leading the charge and Mellis is its honey beer.
You'd expect this to be sweet, but although there is sweetness in the finish, the overwhelming impression is of a Belgian blonde ale: lots of hoppy freshness in the front, yeast in the nose, summer in the taste.
It's a big bottle, if you can find one. Mine was imported specially for Flaveurs Bieres et Caprices, a Montreal beer and food tasting event in December 2007. The 750ml bottle has cellared very nicely and this is a delicious beer almost two years since I snagged it.
Not worth flying to Italy for, but... almost!
