Baltika 8 beer review

The love of beer runs deep in Russia.
There was even an attempt to create the Beer Lovers Party (a
political party,
that is), with factions for dark beer, light beer and kvass lovers!
The attempt of course failed — the party only got something like 0.62% of the votes in the 1998 election and then disbanded — but the dream is being kept alive by the numerous breweries across that mighty land.
The St. Petersburg-based Baltika Brewery, one of the best known Russian beer producers (the largest in Eastern Europe and only second to Heineken in all of Europe), seems to make a beer for every taste, from non-alcoholic ale to the 10% ABV Baltika 9. Yeah, it'll put some hair on your chest.

Their numbering scheme is confusing, especially as you get more inebriated, since the numbers on the bottle (0-9, but they don't make a 1) do not correspond to the alcohol content.
I found myself oscillating dangerously between light and dark, strong and weak beer, though I was tasting in numerical order, until I resorted to actually reading the labels. Bah, who wants to do that?
At any rate, there were a number of interesting contenders, but I dubbed Baltika 8 beer "the Tsar of Beer", simply because there is not a beer that compares, at least not in North America.
Number 8 is a wheat ale, but it had none of the "I just ate a loaf of whole wheat bread" aftertaste.
If served cold and with a lemon, or dare I say even an orange, this bottle of delight has a crisp light taste, mellow and sweet, with none of the heaviness or sourness that some wheat ales pack.
At 5% ABV, Baltika 8 beer is the perfect companion for lounging in the park on a hot day.
Get a mango and some citrus fruit, or better yet, make a white fish complemented by mango or citrus chutney and let the good times roll!

"Where does he get all those wonderful toys?"
