Ben Franklin: founding father, polymath, taunter of lightning, turkey booster and all-around good egg. He has left many legacies for the world: the almanac, extreme kite flying and the United States. But his greatest gift to the generations that came after him will almost certainly prove to be the pithy aphorism.
Many of the aphorisms put forward in "Poor Richard's Almanack" are existing sayings that Franklin recrafted and made more popular.
"After three days men grow weary, of a wench, a guest, and weather rainy."
Author's Note: I have to say that Franklin's patience for guests and rain exceeds my own, while my own for wenches exceeds his by some margin.
Author's Wife's Note: I'm not a wench, I'm your wife.
Author's Note: I wasn't talking about you.
Editor's Note: Awkward.
The aphorism quoted on this nice, plus-sized black women's Beer Philosophers Benjamin Franklin T-shirt from CafePress is one of Franklin's less well known sayings: "Never leave that 'til tomorrow what can be drunk today." You can almost feel the wisdom oozing out of every word.
