Belle Gueule Originale: a lager of surprising quality and bitterness
Brasseurs RJ, Montreal, QC, Canada
Some beers are a victim of their own success. You will see this beer EVERYWHERE in Quebec and, much like the macrobrew demons such as Budweiser beer and co, you could be mistaken for assuming that a beer you can buy anywhere must be poor.
Not so! Brasseurs RJ is one of the best brewing companies in the whole of QC, with a product for every taste. Its Belle Gueule series is consistently good.
Originale is a fizzy mid-amber, with a fair head that laces your glass. It smells strongly of summer, with wheat and hops dominating the nose. The bite is bitter and gets even more so as you swallow, while the aftertaste is a lingering bitterness which slowly mellows.
This could easily give Stella Artois beer a strong run for its money.
A fresh, crisp, surprisingly bitter lager that's one of the better among Quebec's 'mainstays'.
