In my annual quest to find holiday beer offerings, I stopped by Trader Joe's and found a couple plus some random beers for tasting. Black Toad was one of the random beers. It calls itself a Dark Ale, but it has some very distinct Porter qualities.
The aroma has some strong roasted and toasted malt and barley scents with chocolate, toffee overtones. There are no hop or yeast ester aromas present. Has a slightly metallic hint that doesn't really affect the smell of the beer.
The appearance is a deep amber or chestnut color, not dark, but it is very clear in appearance with no haze or cloudiness. The head is light and foamy which dissipates quickly and laces the glass as the beer is consumed. Black Toad's flavor has a balanced roasted malt and barley taste. Coffee, toffee and other dark sweet flavors come through with warming of the beer. The flavor lasts for 5–7 seconds on palate. It tastes like drinking a Porter. There is no yeast fruitiness or hop bitterness apparent in this beer.
The mouthfeel is a smooth, moderate texture which coats the palate with a slightly bitter film. Light and refreshing carbonation which tickles the throat.
A very good beer, very drinkable and refreshing, I would definitely drink again. As I said, it reminds me of a Porter without being too thick.
