Me very happy with the generous sampler portions at Brewhouse Brewery
Upon walking down Albert Street in downtown Brisbane, you would never expect to see a sign for a brewpub. But there it was. Brewhouse Brewery. After closer inspection and walking up a flight of stairs, I was mesmerised by all the hardwood features and tables this indeed decked out brewery had.
"I must get a beer sampler and a pizza," I thought straight away. I have found over the years and around the world that brewpubs have either the best pizza or the best burgers. I'll hold you in suspense before letting you know which out of the many I found to have not only the best brew but the burger as well.
Within my sampler were six beers:
Sunshine Honey Wheat 4.5% ABV
Star Lager Classic Pilsener 5% ABV
Engine IPA 5.2% ABV
Midnight Extra Stout 6.3% ABV
Taffy's Bock 6.2% ABV
The Dog's Bollocks; English Midstrength Bitter 3% ABV
Now, it was a time of serious concentration for the mighty taste test.
Sunshine Honey Wheat is a typical Australian style wheat beer. I found it very easy to drink and was happy to know they add locally harvested honey.
Star Lager Classic Pilsner is a light, crisp beer. I highly recommend this beer on a hot summer's day to refresh your thirst.
Engine IPA has an extra strong hoppy flavour, so I recommend this one to those who like the taste. It surely awoke my tastebuds.
Midnight Extra Stout is a very bitter stout. Now, I am a lover of a good dark, meal type elixir. However, I found myself passing on this one. I would recommend to the brewmaster to add a bit more chocolate. Don't get me wrong, it was a good beer. It just needed a little bit more of a flavoured after tone.
Taffy's Bock was by far my favourite beer. I decided after the sampler to have four more of this tantilising brew. It was dark. It was surprisingly light and refreshing. And most importantly, it is 6.2% ABV. I recommend to anyone this beer even if you are a stout or a pilsener fan. You get the best of both worlds in this caramel coloured and flavoured beer.
The Dog's Bollocks. I must admit. I felt this beer tasted like hay. You have to go back to the drawing board, Brewhouse. With the surprise of the flavour, I made sure to let everyone at the table have a sip and they felt the same way too. I only recommend this if you work with cows.
As for the pizza, it was thin and crispy. Good flavour, but I think I will try the burger next time and drink a few more of those Taffy Bocks!
