Subliminal advertising has always been controversial. As it happens, many of the anecdotes about its effectiveness turn out to be false, and research has shown little evidence that it actually works.
An early application of subliminal messages was aimed at trying to get free beers. By weaving tiny messages such as "buy me a beer" or "beer me!" into the fabric of tee-shirts, people hoped that they would be able to scam their fellow bar patrons out of a few pints. As these proved to be ineffective, the messages have gotten less and less subliminal.
This Buy Me a Beer, Dammit! T-shirt, available from Zazzle, eschews all forms of subtlety. The message on the front presents an aggressive front, saying: "I just came to this bar to show off my new T-shirt". When the wearer turns around, onlookers are presented with a simple command: "Buy me a beer, dammit!" It is not recommended that you take this too seriously unless you are trying to start a fight.
