Canada Cup of Beer 2007

A few weeks ago I was given the
wonderful opportunity to
attend the 2007 Canada
Cup of Beer in Vancouver.
Despite having to awake at 5:30am to get to Vancouver by ferry, it was certainly worth it! I arrived at the UBC's Thunderbird Stadium to row after row of beer vendors, an adorable miniature sample stein and a media pass that mercifully let me into the shade of the VIP area.
After a quick lunch of some half-decent barbecue and a pint of Kelowna, BC's Tree Brewing Thirsty Beaver Amber Ale (which was a clean, creamy and very well balanced amber) I set off to start sampling.
Due to the sheer size of the fest and the over 100 types of beer available, I didn't get to sample everything, but I did find some notable brews, both good and bad.
Probably the best beer I came across
was Tin Whistle Brewing
Company's Peaches and
Cream Ale from Pentiction, BC. I'm a big fan of fruit
beers, and this was exactly what I wanted.
Smooth, flavourful and with good tastes of real peaches and apricots. They also had a superb dark honey lager called Killer Bee. Smoky, dark without being cloying and very refreshing.
There were two beers that stuck out on the opposite end as quite poor. The first, Dude, was a low-end, bottom shelf, tasteless pale lager from Pacific Western Brewing Company, the makers of the noxious and infamous "dollar-a-can" TNT.
The other beer came more as a disappointing surprise; Red Truck Ale from North Vancouver. While the flavour was decent, it had a unmistakable and quite strong aroma of propane! It reminded me of helping fill up the BBQ tank at the gas station as a kid. Propane in the aroma and propane in the lingering aftertaste. Whatever caused it ruined the beer for me.
I did manage to successfully stumble back to the ferry, albeit badly sunburnt, at the end of the day. I thoroughly enjoyed the Canada Cup of Beer and, if I'm in BC next year, I'll definitely try to make it down to the next one. So should you!
