Castlemaine Gulf Lager: like watery XXXX Gold
Castlemaine Gulf Lager (3.2% ABV)
Castlemaine Brewery, QLD, Australia
The third Queensland beer tasting brew was Gulf Lager. This is a Queensland beer brewed by Castlemeine XXXX, the same brewery which produces my favourite beer, XXXX Gold. It’s 3.2% ABV and only comes in cans, not bottles.
Therefore, this beer caters to the travelling market. The Outback and regional people who drive around in Utes, horses or other off road vehicles, stopping at night to roll out their swag (sleeping bag) where ever they end up and drink beer under the vast expanse of stars above them.
My regional mates liked this beer. It was smooth and of course, easy to open and fit a stubby cooler perfectly. It doesn't get much better than that. They'd both be very comfortable drinking this beer in front of people and there was no embarrassment factor about drinking it. It was a solid, clean-tasting lager and at 3.2%, a lot could be consumed, which to them, I believe was the whole point.
For me, although I thought this beer was ok, I felt it was too soft on taste. It was a watery XXXX Gold. Perhaps I just prefer a beer with a stronger malt taste. Still, it's a good choice if camping and it wouldn't offend anyone, so if in doubt, the Gulf would be a safe choice.
