Tis' the season to be jolly, and my favorite time for beer drinking every year. Holiday beer season, when all the good little brewers of the world temp us with their annual offering of spicy, aromatic and intriguing takes on the flavors of the holidays.
Don't get me wrong, some of the beers that come out this time of year are horrible and will be reviewed as well.
My first such beer of the year was very much to my liking with smells of allspice, pumpkin pie seasonings and other holiday spices. It has a weak pumpkin aroma with a yeasty sweetness, mild malt aromas are present but no hop scents to mention.
Punkin is a brown ale with a light pale amber color and no cloudiness. It has a light white, bubbly head which dissipates rapidly but laces the glass. There is a strong allspice and nutmeg flavor with mild pumpkin and malt overtones. The slight hop bitterness is almost nonexistent. Taste lingers on the palate for 3-5 seconds and lightly coats the palate.
The beer is light and refreshing with moderate carbonation. There is a mild film which coats the mouth and is reminiscent of eating a piece of pumpkin pie, light and flavorful. This is a great flavored ale. It is very drinkable and the flavor does not overwhelm the quality of the ale. Makes you long for the holidays and what is yet to come from the other brewers this holiday beer season.
