At last, a replica of the famous T-shirt worn by Duffman is available from the incorrigible garment pushers at Tees For All. It's fair to say that Duffmania is higher now that at almost any point since the character was introduced in 1943.
Duffman was not the first superhero to start out as a corporate mascot - few now remember that Batman was originally conceived as a spokesman for the hand-made bat house industry in northeastern Maine - but he was alone in the beverage field for most of his career.
Where Captain America would go after war criminals such as Hitler and the Red Skull, Duffman's arch enemies were the Guardians of the Reinheitsgebot, the German peer purity law that took a dim view of the Duff brewery using such quintessentially American ingredients as mechanically-recovered corn slurry, pumpkin rinds and salmon heads in their beers.
Duffman has never strayed far from pop-consciousness. The brutal death of his sidekick, Hopsicle, at the hands of the Chugger very nearly made front page news. Who could forget Duffman breaking down into almost tears after the brave sacrifice of Duffgirl during the epic "Crisis in Infinite Bars".
