Duvel is, according to Ebenezer's Pub owner Chris Lively, a power that's on the wane. Ask him about Duvel and he will scurry off to his collection, return with a trappist beer and pour it for you. "That's where Duvel should be today, but it got too popular," he'll tell you. And who I am to argue?
Still, I am enjoying this bottle of beer. There's no mistaking the banana esters; you may not even know what an ester is, but smell this beer and the scent of banana hits you hard. It's a lovely, soft mouthfeel, a little gassy.
The banana taste is soon kicked out by a strong alcohol presence, though this is definitely a sweetish beer. Hops creep into the aftertaste and there's an almost peppery quality to the finish.
Like the desserts in a Chinese restaurant, none of this sounds particularly appealing, but it somehow works.
