Edmonton Beerfest 2007
Edmonton, AB, Canada
On February 9th 2007 I attended the First Annual Edmonton Beerfest at the Dinwoodie Lounge in the University of Alberta campus. As a student of the university and an avid beer drinker, I jumped at the chance to attend the function. (The location lacked the credibility of a convention centre, in my opinion.)
Tickets were $15 in advance or $20 at the door plus $0.50-$1.00 per sample. Buying in advanced proved to be a saving grace as you were ushered to the front of the line, while most people at the door had to wait for over an hour. Entertainment was provided by the Murder City Sparrows and it suited the crowd.
Before I get to the beer, I have to vent. I assure you I am the least likely person to hit on a female at a bar, so I was disgusted by the way people acted. Don't get me wrong, drinking and hooking up go together like Malone and Stockton, but there was no need for what went on.
A select few of the 90% male population would patrol the sides and race behind girls as they tried to pay, only to have the guys "cover" their purchases. But now onto why you are reading this... The BEER.
The Edmonton Beerfest featured several breweries from across Canada and a select few from around the world, totalling 99 samples. Beerfest was a great outlet for some local microbreweries in the Edmonton Area and really spread the word. I have plenty of new breweries to visit and beers to samples.
The winners? While no actual awards were given out, again reducing the credibility. Awards would have made it much more professional and less of a binge-drinking festival. So I have prepared my own list of awards.
Best Local Brewery: Alleykat Brewing. They had several varieties, almost all of which were delicious. I recommend Charlie Flints.
Best Canadian-Wide Beer: Sleemans Clear. An easy-drinking, smooth finish and reasonably priced. Some may ask why I did not pick Molson Canadian. Although they are easily Canada's most popular brand, I personally am not a fan, plus it isn't a popularity contest
Best European Beer: Warsteiner Premium Verum Pilsner. As many of you know, this is a delicious beer and easily deserving of the title. Honourable Mention: Grolsch.
Best in Show: Innis and Gunn Original. My my, if you are a whisky or scotch drinker who likes beer, then you have found the perfect brew. Absolutely delicious malty beer with warm finish.
