In general I like to report on breweries as a whole experience: the atmosphere of the pub, the range of beers available and the level of ass-kissing I receive as a Beer Delegate, along with the actual taste and quality of the beer.

However, once in a while an amazing beer comes along; a beer so special it deserves its very own homage. In this case, it’s Flying Dog Brewery's In-Heat Wheat.

Flying Dog Brewery is also special and deserves the whole shebang of a review, so I'm saving the really good stories involving Hunter S. Thompson and gunpowder for a full write-up in a couple weeks, when I take the Official Dog House Tour.

Until then, I present my favorite bitch of them all: In-Heat Wheat beer, baby!

Where to begin in praising this curvy-like-the-Almalfi-Drive Hefeweizen?

Let’s start by saying that I like Blue Moon as much as the next skirt, but if Blue Moon is the Jackie Kennedy of the Hefe World, In-Heat Wheat is Carmen Electra with a nose full of blow on a stripper pole.

Malted white wheat is added to In Heat Wheat beer to give it a big big mouth-feel and proprietary yeast is used during fermentation to develop the flavors.

At first I thought proprietary yeast was something you might want to ask a doctor about, but it turns out that it means they have exclusive ownership of it. Either way, it results in very tangible but mellow banana and clove flavors.

Munich malts and German Perle hops round out the unfiltered brewing process, but take a back seat to the wheaty goodness.

Like any good hot-to-trot lady, In Heat Wheat beer has an alcohol content of 5.1%, which is deceptive considering how light it tastes. It also brought home the Silver Medal for German-Style Hefeweizen at the Great American Beer Festival in 2003 and the Bronze in 2006.

In-Heat Wheat beer is available in everything from a sixer to a keg and there is a list of state-by-state retailers on the Flying Dog website.

Check back to the site for a full review of all the doggie-style brews Flying Dog has to offer in a couple weeks!

Even the impossible can be found on eBay, if you are patient in your searching. Try searching for Russian River (you'll need to narrow down by beer name, ex. Pliny, Damnation, Temptation), Black Albert, or any of the BIG beers. Don't overlook eBay's Belgium Beer results either...
