Fort Garry. A staple in Canadian history. Built by the former Hudson's Bay Company as a trading post, it served as the centre of fur trading for the area now known as Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.
In 1826, a severe flood destroyed the once proud fort, but the Fort Garry name is now known for a new kind of flood.
A flood of flavour!
"There's a subtle, nutty flavour among the strong hops aroma."
"It's an excellent balance between the heavier ales and the lighter pilsners."
"It's like drinking a loaf of bread!"
Though the Fort Garry Brewing Company produces 11 different types of beer, one stands out as a true leader.
The one, the only, Fort Garry Dark Ale.
When I first sampled the city's finest brew, the first thing that came to mind was, "If this beer is made in the very city I'm drinking it, why am I being charged the import price?" I'll tell you why.
Quality.
Beneath the unpainted, corrugated cardboard cases that hold the gem of the north lay bottles filled with brewery-fresh, 5.5% ABV, liquid ambrosia. The food and/or drink of the gods.
Whether straight from the keg or out of a bottle (in which case I must caution you about the frequently chipped mouths), this is not a brew to be passed over if you find yourself in Manitoba or some parts of Alberta.
