Furthermore Knot Stock pale ale review
Submitted by Jason Pinkowski

Jason Pinkowski, Beer Delegate for Wisconsin. This time around, I am trying Furthermore Beer's Knot Stock pale ale. Furthermore is based in Spring Green, WI with all of the brewing done by Sand Creek Brewing Co. of Black River Falls, WI.

Furthermore began as the brainchild of Aran Madden and Chris Staples. They had themselves some great recipes, but no money to purchase the equipment to brew. They enlisted the help of the folks at Sand Creek Brewing to take over the brewing for them and get their product out to market.

I have had Furthermore brews several times in the past at beer festivals and have always enjoyed the beers I have sampled. I was at my local grocery store the other day when my eye caught the six packs of Furthermore Beers in the refrigerator.

Furthermore Knot Stock

Knot Stock ale from Furthermore Beer in Wisconsin, USA.

After looking over the selections, I decided to try the Furthermore Knot Stock since I am a big fan of black pepper and on the label it states that it is brewed with black pepper.

As a homebrewer I was disappointed to see they used twist off bottles, since I can't reuse them, but I went with it anyway.

This beer pours with a rich amber hue with decent clarity, but not brilliant. The head on Knot Stock is white but fairly thin and it dissipates quickly. The aroma is a unique one, with a noseful of malt and an almost an herbal fragrance.

Much to my surprise, the flavor has a bit of bite from the pepper, but I taste more of a mint flavor to the beer. The hop choice is Northern Brewer, which is often noted as having 'wild flavors'. I found some nice toffee notes in the flavor to match nicely with the black pepper. The body of this beer is light and refreshing so it goes down wonderfully easy.

My overall impression of this beer is that it is a truly unique brew that can be quite enjoyable on the patio during the change of seasons. Although not a beer that I would say is a "Can't miss" brew, I would certainly call it a beer that the drinker with an adventurous palate should try.
