Bier&Co Amsterdam, for whom I work, recently received a new load of Colorado brewed American Craft beers and amongst it was Hercules Double IPA, truly a beer 'not for the faint of heart' as the brewery puts it so eloquently.
In Europe you hardly find anything like it - sure enough we have plenty of strong ales, but the almost ludicrous amounts of hop used in this beer is not be found here.
For me Hercules is indeed a formidable beer: even though it is hopped as if it has to last through eternity, it is so wonderfully balanced with a sweet, malty backbone that I really have to force myself opening new bottles.
It comes in at 9.1% ABV, has 85 IBU (bittering points) and has a copper-red color. The brewery doesn't use a micro filter and so one may observe real tiny particles - but other than that, this beer is as clean as whistle.
Given the rather sturdy characteristics it is no surprise that the mouthfeel is quite overwhelming - if not downright tsunami-like. It than pleasantly lingers on, leaving you to chew long on the aftertaste.
