Dallas Reimer, our Beer Delegate for Manitoba.Guide to Manitoba breweries
Submitted by Dallas Reimer

Although Manitoba has a proud history of brewing beer, we are now in what is called a "beer recession". Labatt left us in 1996. Molson in 1997. River City Brewing, once standing proud behind four enormous silver vats, fell in 2001.

Agassiz and Two Rivers tried to take the reins and lead us into a proud new age, in which we could proudly haul our Manitoba-made empties back to the vendor amidst Manitoba-made hangovers, but Agassiz failed early in the 21st century. Two Rivers, though, is still alive and well within the Fort Garry Brewing Company.

One would think that a province overloaded by vast fields of wheat, rye, barley and corn would be a player in the Canadian beer economy.

It looks bleak, but we have hope.

Fort Garry Brewing was founded in 1930 by the Hoeschen family. It operated in Manitoba for 30 years, until it was sold to Molson in 1960. In 1994, Richard D. Hoeschen resurrected the once proud brewery, which has been brewing some of the best beer in Canada ever since.

Mr. Hoeschen passed on eight years later, but his vision continues to be realized. With 11 different varieties of brew and 11% of Winnipeg's draught sales in the bag, they proudly lead us onward into a beer-soaked future as Winnipeg’s largest brewery.

Half Pints Brewery, started in 2006 by David Rudge, is Winnipeg's second and final brewery. It is home to three main brews and six (at last count) "craft brewed" seasonals. Half Pints specialises in brewing flavorful, unfiltered, hoppy beers in small batches. Though small, there is much potential in this young startup.
