Guinness is something of an anachronism in the modern mass-market beer landscape.
Improvements in malting techniques over the centuries have yielded paler malts, suitable for brewing paler beers.
Paler beers began to push their darker brethren out of the marketplace, a trend that was accelerated when the brewing wizards in Pilsen unleashed their light golden lagers upon the world.
The march of light lager pushed many historical dark beer styles to extinction, until the recent rise of the microbrewery, but Guinness beer, darker than almost anything, has somehow managed to survive and maintain a presence in the mass market.
How did the black beer from Ireland manage this little trick? The answer is marketing. Guinness embraced the importance of marketing early and quickly built up a repertoire of memorable brand images and slogans.
