For the Guinness lover in your life, this gift pack includes two glasses, a bottle opener, a "cap catcher" for, erm, catching caps, and a Black and Tan spoon.
The last item is probably the most intriguing. The black and tan is a fun drink named after one of the bloodier episodes in the already bloody history of Anglo-Irish relations.
The 'Black and Tans' were a paramilitary force deployed to suppress the Irish war of independence who became notorious for their brutal attacks against the civilian population.
The 'Black and Tan' is a blend of Guinness beer and pale ale (traditionally Bass ale) which is poured carefully so that the two beers form separate layers. The black and tan spoon makes the construction of a black and tan much easier for those of us who lack the patience and skill to pour it the old fashioned way.
What is the attraction of this layered concoction? Is it the contrast of colors and flavors? The way the light shines through the amber ale to be trapped in the eternal darkness of the stout? Does it speak to something deep inside us? The constant battle between light and not so light?
Perhaps we will never know. All I do know is that it is still a lot easier to understand than a "cap catcher". Seriously people, just put your caps in the trash!
