Hatepi Heart beer review
Submitted by David Friesen
So I was cruising the
French supermarket in Beijing (very traditional I know) and decided to
get a
few new beers to review. I had clearly not experienced all the beer
that China had to offer and was on a mission to expand my
horizons. Well, the first thing I came across was as I perused the
labels was a
beer advertised as 'hate beer'.
Now, I obviously
had to buy a beer with a name like this, so immediately snapped it up.
Slightly
disappointingly the beer is actually called Hatepi Heart beer
and the label
was just lamely abbreviated. But still, I was open-minded as to this
new beer’s
potential.
Coming in 350ml cans, this 3.6% abv beer is from Harbin, where it gets really REALLY cold. So I was expecting substantial to drink.
However, I was again disappointed. A weak lager smelling slightly of fruit was what greeted me. It tasted fairly average too, although it was smoother than some Chinese lagers I have tried. But to be honest, at 3.6% it shouldn’t exactly taste harsh!
However, the beer was redeemed slightly by the brilliant brewery address: "50 kilometre away from Hawu Road".
I guess whoever designed the cans had been sampling a lot of what was inside beforehand!
Hatepi Heart beer is fairly average and quite weak in taste, but it is still hard to hate the ‘hate’ beer.
