Heavy Seas "The Big Dipa" (10.5% ABV)
Clipper City Brewery, MD, USA

As a pirate performer, it's hard to pass up a beer with a skull and crossbones on the label. In days gone by, that would have a been foolish and fatal decision, since the skull and crossbones was the mark of poison.

But being a bold adventurer, I decided to overlook this fact and buy a bottle. I also overlooked the fact that I was paying nearly $6 for a 22 oz. bottle of this Double India Pale Ale. After all, that can buy a six-pack (72 oz.) of lesser brew, if getting a buzz is more important than flavor and a solid drinking experience.

According to the Clipper City Brewing Company's website, the Heavy Seas line is "their highest expression of the brewer's art." That's some pretty high-falutin' words to lay claim to, especially when they compare it to a "fine wine" where it will get better over time. Since when does anyone keep a beer around long enough to let it age?

These claims bordered on lunacy. So, putting aside all the umbrage, I opted to taste it for myself. And I must say, it was a pleasant surprise.

First, it pours beautifully. The head is full and cream colored – the amber color of the ale looks a lot like cream soda. Perhaps that explains the color of the head. Coincidence? You decide.

On first sip I can safely say that the flavor of this beer is awesome. It is studdish and bold – the initial taste is smooth as silk, with a heavy, hoppish finish that is not apologetic at all. Nor should it be. The company chose to leave a small amount of live yeast in the package so it carbonates naturally. A very good choice – it adds subtlety and complexity to the entire experience.

So, is it worth the cost of a six-pack? The alcohol level clocks in at 10.5% ABV, so if you’re a bit of a lightweight, this beer will give you a wonderful, delicious buzz. If you're a borderline alcoholic, it's still a good choice because the robust flavors in this beer will confirm the fact that even though your liver is failing fast, your taste buds are still in good order.

And therein lies the magic of Heavy Seas "The Big DIPA". Few beers can serve as a substitute for a visit to the doctor to have your sense of taste checked. Perhaps Congress will be wise enough to include this beer in the National Healthcare Plan as fully deductible.
