Hell Bar

The only sign in front of Hell, which despite what you heard in religious education classes is actually in North Carolina

Hell Bar, at 157 E. Rosemary St. in Chapel Hill, NC, is my favorite neighborhood pub.

Hell has been around for over ten years and it's still going strong. The bar is located in a basement and is all done up in red and black, with pictures of Ozzy Osbourne all over the walls, and black and red furniture with black and red pool tables to match!

Half of the bar is set up to look like a living room, complete with leather couches and retro 1950s dinette sets, and the other half contains the four pool tables.

The cool thing about Hell is that it's not in the least sacrilegious... it's merely a name for a bar below street level which manages to maintain a certain "secrecy" about it. For instance, there is no sign out front; there is only a picture of a pitchfork pointing down a dark staircase leading to the entrance.

Therefore, it maintains exclusivity. But once you're inside, the bartenders treat you like family, "overpour" your drinks and welcome you into their haven with open arms!

They have pool tournaments once a month, a weekly "Foreign Film Night" and monthly Hip-Hop Dance parties where ANYONE can show up and dance their butt off without worrying about being judged by anyone else.

Hell has live bands scheduled at least two or three times a week. There is also a giant framed screen where you can play video games, watch movies, or watch sports.

The staff is friendly and they remember most people who go in; everyone is a regular! Their beer selection is wonderful; they have fourteen beers on tap and over forty bottled beers. They also have a great liquor selection. Their phone number ends 9666, which is also pretty cool (and funny).

I love Hell Bar and have been frequenting it for years, and I bring ALL of my friends there and recommend it to anyone visiting Chapel Hill.
