Thanks to Douglas Gloag for this beer!
A few days ago, I tried one of the best red ales I've ever had -- and it was Japanese! Haneda Sake Amber ale was beautifully balanced and every inch the perfect red. Will this shape up?
In a word, no. It's far from being a bad red, but there's too much bitterness, none of the caramel malt flavor you expect from a red. It pours mahogany with a tiny white head, smells like molasses and bitter hops. Immediately bitter, it gets much more so at the swallow. Quite harsh, very fizzy too.
