James Squire Pilsner
Malt Shovel Brewery
On the flight to Australia hoping to enjoy a nice relaxing beer I became immediately concerned by the glass of urine I soon found myself drinking.
With no return flight booked, or even planned, I thought I was destined to give up my love affair with beer when I arrived in the land that gave the world Foster’s.
Having been here a short time now I’ve accepted that I must change my ways and learn to enjoy lager as the locals seem to have done. As such, I feel it prudent to begin my lager days at the beginning of lager itself, Pilsner.
Thus I begin my quest of appreciation with an offering from Malt Shovel, which also produces James Squire Original Amber ale, which I have been enjoying immensely.
I wasn’t expecting it, but the splendour of the Saaz hops hits you instantly; the majestic aromas dance their way up your nose like Bohemian fairies.
The taste is richer than the watered down urine I was served mid-flight, not what I was anticipating. I feel converted already, although the chance of enjoying this tipple on a night out seems minimal having never seen a Squire brew anywhere but the bottle shop.
This beer has a sparkling golden body, the aftertaste is spicy and hoppy, it truly is a good brew. I’m regretting trying it first now though, I don’t think I can bring my self to downgrade to a cheaper brand.
This has body, character and soul, it’s the Lord where Foster’s is the devil and from now on I will be faithful to the church of James Squire come Sunday ‘arvo.
