Asahi Super
Dry beer review
Submitted by Douglas Gloag
Looking
for first-hand advice on Jap beer? Our man on the ground (or under the
table) in Japan is Douglas Gloag, who over the
coming months will be giving us a unique insight into the world of
Japanese beers.
Among the most interesting aspects of this fascinating country is the attitude to public drunkenness.
Doug will be giving us the gaigin viewpoint (he's lived there for well over a decade and is fluent in both Japanese and Slur, the language of the drunk).

Don’t be fooled by its name! With exception to Sapporo’s Ebisu beer, ASD is one of the smoothest lagers you’ll find anywhere in Japan.
Asahi makes a wide variety of beers, along with [happo-shu] (a kind of low-malt beer, which should be avoided at ALL costs!).
The best-selling beer in the whole nation is ASD. Not only is it an easy beer to quaff, the silver label with black lettering, or silver can with black characters, automatically makes your right hand reach out and grab one!
The cans come in sizes from 135ml (can be secreted ANYWHERE!) to the massive three-litre ‘even I can’t do that down in one’ monster.
Meanwhile, if you prefer bottles, they run from the polite, exacting 334ml size to the 1957ml ‘can be used as a nice vase’ glass bottle.
Until very recently, ALL of these options could be bought from vending machines!
