I've not been exposed to many smoked beers, but after this experience I will definitely seek them out. For me, the most exciting thing about La Boucaneuse was that it took a beer style I am thoroughly sick of (red beer) and added a twist (smoke) to make a beer I would drink again in a moment.
The taste of smoke can make you initially worry that the beer has skunked. Then when you get used to it, you enjoy the subtle effect it has on the beer.
The smoke cuts a lot of the sweetness and makes the red beer (for me) a lot more interesting and tolerable, even enjoyable. By the end, I wished I had another bottle.
