Lakeport Honey lager: It's not so sweet, hon
Ever since running into a brick wall of flavour in the shape of Unibroue Honey pilsner at Christmas 2006, I have always looked forward to trying brews containing (or claiming to contain) honey.
This can of Lakeport Honey lager has been waiting to be drunk for quite a while, so I cracked it open with no little anticipation one hot evening.
The can has an interesting honeycomb effect and promises a golden brew. Once you pour though, guess what? Yet another Canadian red lager! Yes, I seem to be haunted by them. Still, this was going to be different. After all, it is a HONEY lager. Right?
Well, maybe. I got no evidence of honey when I took a long sniff at the glassful of very bubbly beer. Sure enough, the first taste is crisp yet bitter. I suppose if you dig around deep enough in the taste, then you might come up with some honey undertones, but the sweetness has long since departed.
In fact, the longer you allow the aftertaste to linger, the more bitter it becomes, until it finally fades into a distant possibility of a hint of honey.
There's some serious gas here too and a few cans of Lakeport Honey lager would render you unsociable, if you know what I mean...
This is not a remarkable beer. It's not an awful beer. It is most likely a forgettable beer.
