Lakeport Honey lager: It's not so sweet, hon

Hats off to Guinness for this AMAZING fedora! Click to see more the UNOB Guinness Product HQ.

Ever since running into a brick wall of flavour in the shape of Unibroue Honey pilsner at Christmas 2006, I have always looked forward to trying brews containing (or claiming to contain) honey.

This can of Lakeport Honey lager has been waiting to be drunk for quite a while, so I cracked it open with no little anticipation one hot evening.

The can has an interesting honeycomb effect and promises a golden brew. Once you pour though, guess what? Yet another Canadian red lager! Yes, I seem to be haunted by them. Still, this was going to be different. After all, it is a HONEY lager. Right?

Well, maybe. I got no evidence of honey when I took a long sniff at the glassful of very bubbly beer. Sure enough, the first taste is crisp yet bitter. I suppose if you dig around deep enough in the taste, then you might come up with some honey undertones, but the sweetness has long since departed.

In fact, the longer you allow the aftertaste to linger, the more bitter it becomes, until it finally fades into a distant possibility of a hint of honey.

There's some serious gas here too and a few cans of Lakeport Honey lager would render you unsociable, if you know what I mean...

This is not a remarkable beer. It's not an awful beer. It is most likely a forgettable beer.

Thin and wimpy
by: PaoloHamilton

Maybe because I like a chewable beer this beer doesn't do it for me. I got this one by accident because my husband grabbed it rather than the one I sent him for, the Alexander Keith honey lager. This Lakeport lager isn't long in flavor disappearing quickly leaving bitterness and an odd artificial taste on my tongue. There is a lot of carbonation, most likely fed by the sugars and not real honey, and some mike like that. I would rather have dense rich flavor paired with some light hops. This is the beer you buy someone you don't like and want never to come to your house again. You can't blame this beer on Hamilton. Say what you will about the city it's been pretty nice to me. This beer on the other hand has not.

I also disagree
by: Jim R

I have no idea what the author was drinking, but it sure wasn't a bottle of Lakeport Honey. Maybe the can does something to it, I've never had it in the can, but the bottles are clean and smooth. Unfortunately, new parent Labatt is closing the brewery on April 30, 2010, so these reviews may all be for naught. There may still be a product on the shelves with the same box and same bottles, not sure if it'll be the same beer though

Always drink bottle and always fresh and chllled
by: Vince

I've tasted brews from all around Europe and on site: Czech Republic, Germany etc. etc.
Had my first Lakeport Honey Lager last week.
In bottle of course. And fresh from the Beer Store and appropriately chilled. I disagree
very strongly with Ashley's evaluation. She indicated she drank canned Honey Lager. A big NO NO for me. Glass only please.
I frankly like high hop brews. Yet, I very much liked this very well crafted beer. It's smoothness was remarkable. Honey? Please,
one shouldn't ever expect a sweet, cloying honey taste - ever. I found just the slightest interesting hint of honey. I don't find this in the "honey beers" produced down here in the States. Bubbles? mine were tiny - fine and showed the Irish lace on my clean glass. (Much has to do with the pour and temperature of the liquid.)
In brief - I liked this brew very much. Quite a surprising find for me. I've recommended it to my friends. Always: from the bottle-never a can, always fresh, always at appropriate temperature, and don't overdue the head.
I regret I can't find it here in Ohio.

Good Stuff

About a month ago I went to Windsor. I tried some Canadian beers that I cannot find in the States. I liked this beer. I would recommend it to a friend.
