For most of human history, cats have been as essential to successful brewing as yeast. Without the efficient and entirely selfless rodent-catching services provided by cats, brewers would have never been able to keep large stocks of grain around for any period of time.
In spite of this association with brewing, it was long believed that cats did not care for beer. The exploits of Mittens O'Leary, the stout-drinking cat of County Offaly, showed the falseness of that belief, but gave rise to another: that cats only care for dark ales.
The rise of sweet, or "milk", stout only cemented this belief further. As a matter of fact, cats were among the first mammals to enjoy the lighter beers to come out of the city of Pilsen.
