Magic Hat #9: not a fruit beer you should fear
Magic Hat #9
Magic Hat Brewing, VT, USA
I've heard various people say that Magic Hat makes some pretty decent beer.
Vermont Beer Delegate Mattias Dahlstrom is not a huge fan of their stuff, but I felt it only polite to give them a whirl.
Magic Hat does have a wide variety of beers, most of which seem to be strange variations on the theme. #9 is no exception, being an apricot flavoured beer. No bad thing in itself and I am quite a fan of apricots.
Just as well, as it turns out.
It was definitely one of those days when you NEED a beer, rather than simply wanting one.
I'd been in charge of our three kids alone for most of the day and the twins (Declan and Julian) are going through a fussy time right now.
Still, I tried to remain neutral, as I always do and approach Magic Hat #9 the same way I'd approach any new beer: with caution.
It pours a golden amber colour and immediately the smell of apricots is strong. Unlike some fruit flavoured beers, #9 is not overpoweringly apricoty or too sweet. Believe it or not, the most prevalent taste is BEER!
I liked this beer a lot. It was a hot, trying day and I needed the drink.
