Melbourne Bitter: Is this the most underrated beer in Australia?

For years I looked down on this beer, I always thought of it as being the little brother of Victorian Bitter and therefore never gave it a chance. How I’m regretting that choice now.

Melbourne Bitter would truly have to be one of the most underrated beers on the Australian market. Don’t believe me? Well, type Melbourne Bitter into Facebook and you’ll find a group dedicated to that very fact.

(While you're at it, join the UNOB Facebook group! Ed.)

My first experience with this beer was at my local football club. A few months back when, after a heavy night of drinking, the only beverages on offer were that of Sprite and Melbourne Bitter. Continues below

Although cringing at the mere utterance of its name, I went with the Melbourne and took the plunge that so many had taken before me when in a dire situation. As I reluctantly downed the beer, to my surprise the taste was not all that bad and as I continued drinking I became more and more fond of its bitter and nutty taste, which seemed to go down the hatch with much more ease then any other bitter beer I had tried in the past.

From that night on I have found myself choosing Melbourne Bitter over some of my long-standing favourites and although it is not offered on tap at any bar in Melbourne, don’t let this deter you from heading down to your local bottle shop and giving it a go, it won’t disappoint.

Oh and did I mention that it’s one of the cheapest beers on offer? So it won’t hurt your hip pocket either. Yet another tick for Melbourne Bitter!

Melbourne Bitter
by: Rob

Could not agree more.
VB seems to be very bloating since the alcohol level was reduced. Carlton Draught seems to be going the same way.
Melbourne Bitter tates nice and is not bloating. Very nice beer and usually one of the cheapest to buy, just picked up a slab for $31.50.
Truly the most underrated beer.

There's no finer beer anywhere. No pussy lime wedge. No flash ad to sell it;stands on its merit. Straight from the long-neck.

Good to see i'm not alone!
by: Luke Heazlewood

Wow! Never thought anyone would read this article, let alone Melbourne drinkers themselves! When I wrote this over a year ago prices were fairly cheap but as many of you would have noticed, prices for all beers in Australia have risen substantially over the past twelve months... I work at a bottle shop and have seen the price of a slab of VB or MB go from Under $40 to a whopping $47!!! .. Almost brings a tear to my eye! .... But when you compare that to imports such as Corona that now retail for around $60 ... the choice is simple... Melbourne all the way!!

Well said!

i couldnt agree more. Melbourne bitter is truly underrated. but i think this may be a good thing, when you spot another drinking a melbourne you gain instant respect because you know they are no trend follower or pretender. Melbourne drinkers know there is more to beer than just CD and VB. The king of VIC beers!

Melbourne Bitter is sooo good they named a capital city after it!
by: John

What a great article. I too am a Melbourne Bitter enthusiast. I do however believe that it is an aqquired taste! I used to be a stock standard VB drinker then caught on to Melbourne when I realised that if I drink it then I wikll know which drinks are mine at a party!

However, in recent times Melbourne Bitter has become more popular amongst younger people and I think CUB has taken note of this by raising the price. I have paid in excess of $50 for a slab of Melbourne.

All in all Melbourne is a top drop and I highly recomend it to anyone!
