As with any guide to beer, the main problem with our launching the Newfoundland and Labrador beer guide was finding the right person (or persons) for the job.
Recently the Secretary-General, who is quite a fan of Stuart McLean's The Vinyl Cafe, was listening into the show and heard a letter being read out by Emily Urquhart of Newfoundland.
The gist of her letter was about the folk scene she'd found herself getting involved with since moving to St John's from Ontario. But the undercurrent of her letter was a love of beer and a desire to share happy, beery times with her new friends and neighbours. Music to our ears!

Emily Urquhart was head-hunted by Secretary-General Ash after a letter she wrote to The Vinyl Cafe was read out by Stuart McLean in May 2007...

...and her colleague, Gregory Knott, sits between the angel of abstinence and the devil of indulgence. As you can see, the devil wins (as usual).
Somehow, despite a brain with all the retentive qualities of a broken sieve and the attention span of a paralysed hamster, Ash managed to retain the salient facts long enough to get to a computer and begin some research.
After much Googling, he tracked down Emily, sent an invite and waited.
Sure enough, Emily responded and what's more, she might be able to bring some more Beer Delegates on board.
Some time later, Gregory Knott offered his services to the UNOB as a fellow Delegate and who were we to refuse?
We're firm believers here in the constant struggle between good and evil, light and dark (beers), restraint and bloody mindedness.
We liked his sample review. We appreciated his application speech. But most of all, we loved the picture. (You can see the angel sitting on his right shoulder, but obviously the devil on his left is way more appealing!)
Let's hear from both of them.
I am the kind of woman who likes her beer. Take
me to a wine bar and I'll order a Guinness.
Arriving in Newfoundland from Ontario last fall, I discovered an entire cache of beer brands that have not made the ferry crossing to the mainland.
A real shame for the rest of Canada, but a great discovery for me! I look forward to sharing my beer adventures on the rock as a Newfoundland Beer Delegate for the United Nations of Beer.
I believe that beer is more than just an alcoholic drink. It is an equaliser and a social leveler.
Besides the beautiful flavours and wonderful tastes, it is a part of our life and our heritage. It is a social relaxant. Just one beer can change an evening and relax everyone. It can lift the weight of the world off your shoulders after a long day.
Going out for a beer with friends is
an event worth
cherishing. It crosses boundaries and is a part of the fabric that
makes up our
Canadian society more than any other beverage.
Think you would make a great Beer Delegate, a beer supremo? Perhaps to help Emily and Gregory with Newfoundland and Labrador, or some other part of the world? Don't be shy! Come to our Beer Delegates page and apply!
