Now I've been around for awhile, I've tried quite a few different styles of beers, from lagers to ales to stouts. With that being said though I've never had a quite a run in with a black ale before!
Bete Noire, brewed by the Paddock Wood Brewing Company in Saskatoon, is just as the label boasts, "an inky black ale, smooth and roasty, with a creamy touch of oatmeal." I've never been a big fan of oatmeal in my time but this I can handle!
A semi-sweet start, comes on fast, but is quickly overridden by an smooth bitterness that stays just long enough not to leave a horrid taste in your mouth, as some stouts I've tried over the years seem to.
Ok, I know it's not a stout, but just at a glance one might think that minus the 2-inch think layer of head that is normally associated with a stout.
This is a much cleaner, brisker tasting dark beer. Its heavy enough to carry a rich hop-filled flavour yet light enough to not make you extremely bloated after 2 or 4 or 6 of them!
So if you're looking for a different take on an ale, and happen to be in the Saskatoon area, go to a local pub and try a Bete Noire. It definitely caught me off guard!
