Paradisiac (7.5% ABV)
Brewed for Supermarche Rahman by Au Maitre Brasseur
When a somewhat dingy convenience store which specialises in beer commissions an exclusive brew from one of Montreal's better microbreweries, you know it's a runaway success (the shop, not the beer).
Supermarche Rahman is my favourite beer shop in Montreal, better by far than the much-touted Metro Joanette.
Okay, Joanette is cleaner. You aren't going to cut your hand on the broken glass of the import fridge. And you won't die if you eat any of the food you buy there.
But Rahman has a dusty charm that's unique. So this beer, which also had a dusty charm after spending all summer in a garage and then three months in our new cellar - a real, 95-year-old stone and earth cellar - by the time I got to it.
It's 7.5% ABV and cuivree in style. It pours clearly golden orange-brown and had a lot of yeast suspended in it.
The taste was strong, alcohol cutting bitter fruit and yeast. I loved it; Paradisiac is a very capable beer.
