Picaroons Winter Warmer

Picaroons Winter Warmer: BIG BEER!
I had a couple of glasses of Picaroons Winter Warmer on draught at Wilser's Room (commonly known as The Tap Room) in Fredericton, NB.
History: The Winter Warmer won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships in Chicago in 1998 under the "strong ale" category. I think it is fair to say this ale is the most anticipated seasonal ale in Fredericton. Bottles of this stuff seem to sell like crazy during the Holiday season.
Sytle: The brewery calls this an English barley wine.
Colour: Tortoise shell brownish red.
Nose: Slight caramel and cantaloupe.
Taste: The first impression is magnificent! This is a big beer! There is a rich, dense velvety smoothness on the tongue with an even caramel and well-toasted grain flavour. Although there is a hoppy quality, it is so well-balanced with the other flavours that you might not notice it at first.
My beer was probably served a bit too cold; as it warmed up there were shades of maple syrup, cardamon and orange peels. Today there is a dignified fine carbonation. As I have said in past years, it really seems to taste as if there are spices added.
