Alright, we've come to the end of our beer journey through Montana. It has been a long and tasty road, but all good things must come to an end and I am out of beer.
Pig Ass Porter is by far the best American porter I have ever tasted and it could rival those in England. It starts with an aroma which is rich with roasted malt aromas and completed by the scents of chocolate and coffee, almost like a stout. There is no real scent of hop bitterness or earthiness to be mentioned nor any yeast esters or fruitiness.
This beer's appearance is deep brown in color with dark amber hues. There is no haze or cloudiness in the appearance of this Porter. Pig Ass has a moderate carbonation which creates a thick foamy tan head that lingers and laces the glass as the beer is consumed. All of these characteristics are common in a good Porter.
The flavor is full of dark malts is very smooth and there is a mild coffee and chocolate aftertaste. A mild hop bitterness and bite comes in at the finish which gives this Porter a little earthiness, but the black and chocolate malts blend well and give this beer a lot of character.
The mouthfeel is smooth in texture which coats the palate with a strong bittersweet chocolate flavor. Refreshing with moderate carbonation and medium body. The chocolate malt coats the palate and stays on the tongue for some time.
Overall, this is a great beer. I have not reviewed very many porters, but I have consumed many. This is one of the best Porters I have had. Brewer calls it an original London style Porter, And I would agree that it as good as Fuller’s London Porter or Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter.
