While walking around the Magnificent Mile area of Chicago, my new friend Melanie Fine suggested we stop for a drink. They must know their clientele here -- Pippin's is right next door to a check cashing and currency exchange center!
It's dark inside and has that unmistakable smell of urinal blocks that is so common in British pubs; I felt right at home. The server was friendly. Much to my surprise, Pippin's Tavern offers a great selection of beers on tap, somewhere approaching two dozen, including a seasonal Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale, which I was tempted to try, the local Goose Island 312, and the beer I just had to order, Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA, described somewhat modestly as just "Dog Fish IPA" on the menu.
Everything I said about this beer from the bottle applies more so on tap.
Melanie and I had to catch a bus, but I would like to have stayed on and tried the pumpkin ale... I'm in Chicago for another three days, so perhaps there will be time yet!
Pippin's Tavern is well worth a visit. The beer is reasonably priced and there's a lot of choice.
