Rousse Forte aux Fruits beer review
Submitted by Ashley Cotter-Cairns

Ashley Cotter-Cairns, UNOB Secretary-General.The smell and taste of this beer was described during the first UNOB Beer Tasting Night by various testers as "Kibbles and Bits dog biscuits", "Dr. Pepper that's gone off" and "More like a sauce you'd pour over something than an actual beer."

Strange, then, that every single person who tried it also qualified their comments with, "I'm not saying I don't like it..."

The member of the team who had most to lose with Rousse Forte aux Fruits beer was Alex, husband of Quebec Beer Delegate Shannon Wand, who brought this beer along specially as one of his favourite recent finds.

I struggled to describe this beer on the night and it's no easier now. People on the wrong side of the Atlantic won't understand this, but in my grasping for a description, I imagined a can of supreme Scottish 'soft' drink, Irn Bru, that had been spiked by a mean partygoer.

I was also the person who mentioned Dr. Pepper. The fact is, this is a strong beer at 7.5% abv that will remind you of a soft drink, with an unexpected kick in the teeth.

Rousse Forte aux Fruits beer tastes like every bad memory of your childhood birthday parties where you ate too much cake and drank too much soda. It's sweet, spicy and was described by Irish Mike's wife Andrea as "Tasting like beer with an aftertaste of Christmas pudding".

A quick summary would be bittersweet. It tastes sweet and finishes bitter, with a long, tangy aftertaste. The head is frothy and pinkish-red, the beer looks like a car accident in a cloudy sunset, with bits floating about in it (if you're lucky).

Rousse Forte aux Fruits beer.I'm well aware that all of this sounds terribly uncomplimentary. In fact, Rousse Forte aux Fruits beer is a bit of a dark horse.

I remember not really enjoying it on the Beer Tasting Night, but my follow-up bottle tonight is going down really nicely.

It might be one of those brews that is better drunk slightly below room temperature, as this one is, rather than chilled straight from the fridge.

This certainly won't be to everybody's taste. But if, like me, you find the 'finer' beers such as IPAs rather too bitter, then this might be a great way to bridge your beer taste gap

It's sweet enough in the moment to satisfy beer wusses, with enough growling Rottweiler in the aftertaste to appease beer snobs.

You should probably try it, just for curiosity's sake. Unusual.
