Rubicon Purple maibock (6.8% ABV)
Rubicon Brewing, CA, USA
Out of all the beers I tasted at Rubicon, this one was the greatest and most impressive of the lot.
A beer in the key of maibock, Purple may be the most skillfully named beer I have ever come across. When you take your first sip, the Nobel hops fill your mouth with an herbal earthiness that tastes exactly like purple.
Not content with just hints of purple, or a purplish nose, Rubicon developed a beer that tastes EXACTLY like purple. That may explain the case of purple crayons I saw them cart in through the back...
In all seriousness, this beer imparts a strong earthy flavor with a smooth body and an unobtrusive aftertaste and does it all with an alcohol content of 6.8% ABV. It is little wonder they call this beer "The Velvet Hammer".
I would be remiss if I did not mention the worldliness of this beer's ingredients. Besides the Nobel hops I mentioned earlier, Rubicon Purple maibock has malt from Germany and Weinstephan yeast.
Once combined in Rubicon's magical way, the beer is aged eight weeks in a Sacramento cellar. And there are no cellars like Sacramento cellars.
