Necessity is the mother of invention, and the India Pale Ale is a creation of necessity. Its name somewhat belies its origin; the IPA was invented by the British.
But IPA isn't a total misnomer. During the early 18th century, following the establishment of the British East India Company, English brewers strove to create a brew stalwart enough to survive the journey from London to Bombay.
Legion Britons were employed in India, driving a demand for beer. The skunked beer that arrived after a six-month voyage was unsatisfactory at best. Continues below
The solution was more alcohol. Louis Pasteur's parents hadn't even met, so the Brits fought microbes with alcohol and hops.
The result was a strong, hoppy beer that withstood the length of the trip 'round Cape Horn.
You'll find that Sierra Nevada's Celebration ale is not dissimilar from their famed Pale ale (which is an American Pale ale, mind you).
Celebration is noticeably hoppier, with just a hint of spice to remind you it's a winter brew.
Copper in color and particularly effervescent, the robust aroma foreshadows a subtle malt. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature.
