Vermont Beer Delegate Mattias Dahlstrom arrived this evening armed with four interesting beers for us to bring in the new year with. Wet Hop ale was the first of the night. At 6.7% ABV, it was hardly a mild way to kick off the evening.
The description on the label was fascinating: a tale of picking hops in WA and shipping them rapidly to the brewery in CA to brew the beer with "wet" hops. This happens but once per year and this is the 12th version they have released.
The result creates a piney, citrus aroma and taste. Actually when you drink it, you'll be reminded of the IPA experience; you'll be waiting for the huge hop kick to follow. The bitterness is understated here and, as Mattias described it, the taste is almost vegetable in nature.
Less head and less lace than an IPA, and the aftertaste is more rounded and clean. Still bitter but not the wet-slap of hops big IPAs deliver.
Being a big fan of IPAs, I did enjoy this beer and felt I had to record my feelings while the beer is still fresh in the glass. Well worth checking out if IPAs leave your face puckering with the bitter aftertaste. Happy new beer.
