Sleeman Honey Brown
Sleeman Honey Brown (5% ABV)
You'd expect a honey beer to be sweet and cloying; some certainly are. However, Sleeman Honey Brown is not among them. It's actually a decent beer with loads of bitterness in the finish.
The honey is limited to the nose (a slight whiff) and the initial bite, which is sweet for a brief moment. Then bitterness comes in and sweeps away all before it. The finish is not unlike Smithwick's.
A minute or so after the swallow, you once more get a tiny hint of sweetness.
Only extreme gassiness makes me hesitate to thoroughly recommend the Honey Brown. It's probably the best of the Sleeman beers.
That's not saying much, but you probably would not complain too much if this wore a microbrew label and you were paying 50 per cent more for it.
