Thanks to Dave Oplinger for this (and the rest of the Sprecher vertical) beer!
Living in Quebec, beer in this style is fairly commonplace and we take it a bit for granted. Unibroue puts out a range of big, yeasty Belgian-style ales, some of which I love and some of which leave me cold.
Sprecher's take on the style is excellent. I know because the immediate reminder of Unibroue beers like Maudite is there, but rounded out with a more mellow aftertaste.
It's cloudy orange in color, almost no head. Huge yeast and citrus peel smell. That yeast comes through initially but is balanced by a smooth sweetness. It's also not too fizzy. A very tasty brew.
