Recently I had the opportunity to go to dinner at the Cannon Brew Pub in Columbus Georgia. Downtown Columbus is a bustling, nightlife rich area of the city, with many clubs, bars, and eating establishments.
The Cannon brew pub has been there since 1999, and yet I have always overlooked it until about a year and a half ago when I started getting into homebrewing my own beer and really enjoying good beers for the first time.
For the most part I have always taken real beers for granted, living in Berlin Germany, Mannheim Germany, and Tacoma Washington I was never more than an arms reach away from a good beer. That is until I moved to The Chattahoochee Valley area. This lack of a good local beer is what drove me into homebrewing....but I digress.
The Cannon, as we call it around here, Is a great little microbrewery serving about 5 full time beers and a seasonal or two. On my last visit I tried a Special 'Ops I.P.A. what i got was a medium gold-slightly reddish colored beer, piney hops with notes of citrus but not over bearing at all, it had a clean taste and crisp mouth feel. I did plan to try another style on this visit but after my first glass of Special 'Ops I decided to stick with it and try another style beer there real soon. (I will keep you posted when I do.)
The atmosphere at the Cannon is great, its in an industrial factory style brick building complete with belt driven ceiling fans. The brewery is right behind the bar in plain view, and the food is great! I had Mr. Jeter's famous chicken, it was a marinated grilled chicken breast with a brew mushroom sauce and cheddar mashed potatoes. The serving sizes are just right and the price is fair, leaving plenty of money for more beer on the meal ticket.
If anyone is ever in the area around Columbus Georgia you should do yourself a favor and visit The Cannon Brew Pub and have a pint and a good meal.
