Visit our English beers guide
If you're looking for a fine place to stay at a great price, or just a true English pub in a pretty village, you can't go wrong with the White Lion at Wherwell.
Perched on top of a small hill, surrounded by thatched cottages, the pub, which at the time of our visit had five real ales, including Doom Bar from the cask, is also known as a centre of pie excellence! And if you need any more reasons to visit, the pub dates from the 17th century and has loads of character and the bar staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

All the beers were in great condition. The lines are regularly cleaned and the beer tasted fresh. Nice to see that all except the Harvey's were served in matching pint glasses.
The food
Who ate all the pies? Us! In fact, we tried chicken and tarragon, beef and stout, and beef and stilton.
Lunchtime the bar was packed; however, the service was prompt and polite. All the food was delicious.

Our evening guests arrived and the bar was less busy, yet I would say the service was not as good in the evening. A couple of our dishes got mixed up and one dessert arrived cold and had to be sent back.
Accommodation
The rooms have a little character, but they are very clean and nicely furnished. They are not en-suite, but the bathrooms are clean and the shower was great.
Good value at 55 Quid per room per night (booked through LateRooms).
Conclusion
The staff are really excellent and the pub is well appointed, loaded with character and makes an effort to supply fine ales. Apparently they are taking sales away from the macro lagers, which can only be a good thing!
The White Lion at Wherwell is a super choice for an away day visit and we thoroughly recommend it.
